Week of 5/5/14 – Happy Cinco de Mayo! And NPF has much to celebrate, too, because folks – we are halfway through environmental remediation! An old house wrapped in plastic & tape never looked so beautiful. The past week has been a joy to witness at the Norwood site, as the remediation contractors have worked diligently to remove everything inside that had asbestos in it. Look at the old interior pics – see all that junk all over the floors? It’s gone! So is all the old plaster, weird dropped ceilings from decades of “remuddlings,” and floor tiles that were not safe. Right now the air inside the house is being sent through a triple filter system 24/7. It’s all a very careful process that ensures we have a right and safe beginning for Norcliff’s new lease on life.
This week will see a related process regarding lead paint removal and/or encapsulation. By Friday, the Norwood bungalow will be on the other side of remediation – pretty mind-boggling, as this is something we’ve all dreamed about for years.
I’ll end by repeating from last week: From here, we can move forward with all the other work of Phase I: engineering a new foundation, replacing rotted wood, removing interior walls, sheathing the house in protective plywood, installing a temporary shingled roof, etc. When Phase I is done, we’ll have a strengthened, straightened-out, cleaned-up & protected bungalow, ready for its return to Arts & Crafts beauty (aka Phase II). Time for a Cinco de Mayo celebration dance.
